Mohammad Asghar Afghan

Mohammad Asghar Afghan, born on December 22, 1987, in Kabul, Afghanistan, is a former professional cricketer and the inaugural Test captain of the Afghanistan national cricket team. A right-handed middle-order batsman and a medium-fast bowler, he played a pivotal role in Afghanistan’s ascent in international cricket. His international debut came in 2009, and he went on to represent Afghanistan in all three formats of the game.

In May 2018, Asghar was appointed as the captain for Afghanistan’s first-ever Test match against India, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s cricket history. Under his leadership, Afghanistan achieved notable successes, including their maiden Test victory against Bangladesh in 2019. He captained the team in 59 One Day Internationals (ODIs), securing 34 wins, and led in 52 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), achieving 42 victories, making him one of the most successful captains in Afghanistan’s cricket history.

Asghar announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket in October 2021, during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. Post-retirement, he has remained active in cricket development and administration, bringing his extensive experience to StarLine Sports Services Company as its President. In this role, he is dedicated to nurturing talent and promoting sports both within Afghanistan and on the international stage.
